SL Microphone Problems

My 2017 Mercedes SL with a gasoline engine is giving me major headaches. The hands-free microphone just decided to quit. I can't make any calls through the car. The display shows everything is connected via wireless connection but nobody can hear me. I tried fiddling with the volume control and even checked the audio input settings, but nothing seems off. Plus, there's some error stored in the system memory. Could this be the infotainment system going kaput? I'm dreading the repair cost. Anyone else had this happen? I'm guessing it's not about ambient noise or voice recognition, because that's usually fine.

Whoa, sounds frustrating. I had something similar happen in my SL, same model, different year. The telephony just went silent. I also messed with the volume control and checked the wireless connection. For me, it turned out to be a faulty microphone module. Do you hear any weird static or distorted sound when you try to make a call? Or does the other person hear a ton of static? That might narrow it down. What sort of error is stored?

Okay, a faulty microphone module... interesting. No weird static or anything, it's just dead silence on the other end. The error message is just a generic 'Microphone Malfunction' thing, doesn't really give much detail. But how did you figure out it was the module? And is that part of the whole infotainment system or something separate? I'm not super techy, so ELI5, please.

Right, so since you have no static, it could still be the same thing. I didn't actually figure it out myself. I took it to a workshop and they ran some diagnostics. It turns out the module is a separate part, but it's linked to the infotainment system. So, yeah, unfortunately you probably have to get it checked by a pro to be sure, and maybe they can fix the error. Could save you some money by avoiding the full replacement that others had.

Alright, that's what I was afraid of. A trip to the workshop it is. Thanks so much for sharing your experience, at least now I have a better idea of what to expect. So, I brought my car to the workshop, and it turns out that you were right. They checked the microphone module, and it had a defect. The whole thing cost me 800€, and now it works like a charm. I am so glad that I don't have to suffer from bad quality anymore.
