My car had similar symptoms: the shifter was grinding and there was this weird squealing noise. I would definitely say it was a serious problem. Don't let it run too long, it could seriously affect your car performance. The mechanic looked at it and replaced the ECU. Haven't had any further problems with it so far. And as for the transfer case, that was also in emergency mode at one point, but that was fixed after a visit to the mechanic. So all in all, it was worth the money. Hope this helps you!
