If it's dark, sludgy, or low, then you know you've got a problem. Honestly, though, my issue turned out to be worse than just low oil. I'd suggest a workshop to give it a look.

Thanks for the advice! It turned out to be defective gears in the transfer case as suspected; it required a replacement, costing me 330€ Appreciate the help!

I had something similar with my SM3. Did you check for any oil leakage around the transfer case? It might be worth looking into the state of your gear oil before you assume the worst.
