SM3 Key Battery Issue

I'm having issues with my 2002 Renault SM3 with a gasoline engine. I keep getting a 'Key battery low' warning, and the keyless access isn't working. There's an error stored, and the locking/unlocking is acting up. Could it just be the key battery?

Summary of the thread

The issue with the 2002 Renault SM3 involved a 'Key battery low' warning, affecting the keyless access and remote locking/unlocking functions. The problem was likely due to a weak key battery, which is common in older vehicles. Replacing the key battery resolved the issue, restoring the keyless entry and remote functions. If the problem had persisted, further investigation into the key's transponder and the car's receiver unit would have been necessary.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

I had similar issues with my SM3. Are you having trouble starting the engine, or is it just the remote locking and keyless entry?

The engine starts fine. It seems to be only the remote locking, unlocking, and keyless entry. Could a dead key battery really be the only thing causing this?

Yes, a weak key battery often causes those symptoms. Given the car's age, it's likely. But if a new battery doesn't fix it, you might need to take it to a workshop to check the key's transponder and the car's receiver unit.

I replaced the key battery, which cost about 37€, and that fixed it. Thanks!
