SM5 Cold Start Issue
Summary of the thread
The 2000 Renault SM5 is experiencing cold start issues, including poor performance, misfires, and hesitant throttle, suspected to be caused by a faulty cold start injector. Despite checking the fuel lines and filter, the problem persists. A suggestion was made to conduct a rigorous injector test to assess the fuel spray pattern and volume, which led to the confirmation of a defective cold start injector. Replacing the injector resolved the issue, resulting in improved starting and running conditions.

Thanks! When you say 'rigorous injector test,' what specific procedures are involved? What tools or techniques did you use to find the faulty injector? I want to be thorough before replacing anything.

I didn’t do the test myself, but the mechanic said they assessed the fuel spray pattern and volume from each injector. They used equipment to measure the injector's performance under different conditions. Given the age of my car and the labor, replacing all injectors was best. Based on my experience, take it to a workshop that can diagnose fuel injection systems. They can do the tests to pinpoint the problem. It's like taking your car to a specialist instead of trying to fix it yourself with a hammer!

Thanks for the advice. I went to a workshop, and they confirmed it was a defective cold start injector. The total cost was 515€ for the injector and labor. It now starts and runs perfectly. Your insights helped me resolve this quickly.

That sounds like an issue I had with my old Opel Vectra. The poor cold start and misfire suggest a fuel delivery problem during startup. In my case, it was a faulty injector valve not delivering enough fuel when the engine was cold. Have you done a rigorous injector test to check their function? It’s like a doctor listening to your heart – you need to listen to the injectors!
