SM5 Height Control Problem
Summary of the thread
A 2018 Renault SM5 owner experienced issues with the height control system, including a warning light, misaligned headlights, uneven car stance, and a bumpy ride. The problem was suspected to be related to the leveling sensor. Another owner suggested checking the control rods on the height sensors, as a defective control rod had caused similar symptoms in their vehicle. After professional diagnosis, it was confirmed that the control rod on the leveling sensor was defective, and repairing it resolved the issue.

I hadn't considered the control rods, focusing on the sensor. When you say 'defective,' was it visibly broken, or worn? How did you pinpoint the control rod rather than the sensor or air suspension?

It wasn't visibly broken at first, but the joint connecting the rod to the sensor arm had excessive play. This caused inconsistent readings. Is there a way to be sure it is the root cause? Not without proper diagnostic equipment. Given the symptoms and the error code, I'd recommend a workshop that can diagnose ride height control systems. Replacing parts randomly can get expensive. I'd take it in.

I appreciate the advice. I had the system professionally diagnosed. The control rod on the leveling sensor was defective. The repair was about 110€. Everything is back to normal. Thanks for sharing your experience!

That sounds familiar! I drive an SM5 too. I had similar symptoms: warning light, headlight aiming, and uneven stance. Did you check the control rods on the height sensors? Mine was a defective control rod on one of the sensors. It was inexpensive, but the symptoms were unsettling. Do you suspect the control module?
