SM5 Stiff Steering Angle Sensor

Hi, I'm having some trouble with my 2019 Renault SM5 (gasoline engine). I've noticed the steering has become very stiff, almost as if the power steering is failing intermittently. The steering wheel also vibrates and shakes sometimes, which is quite unnerving. My car has about 68430 km on it. Could this be a faulty steering angle sensor?

Hey, I had a similar issue on my SM5 not too long ago. Stiff steering and weird vibrations. I'm betting on the angle sensor. Have you scanned it for any fault codes?

Thanks for the quick reply! I haven't scanned it myself yet, but is it possible it's just a coding issue with the sensor? I've read online that sometimes they need to be recalibrated.

Recalibration is possible, but in my case, the sensor was genuinely faulty. I'd suggest getting it checked by a workshop to confirm, but based on your symptoms, a defective sensor is highly likely. Prepare to replace it.

Thanks a lot for the advice! I took it to the workshop, and you were spot on. The steering angle sensor was indeed defective. The repair, including a new sensor and labor, came to about 195€. Steering is back to normal now!
