Smart Forfour Stalling: Faulty Fuel Sensor Alert

Thanks for detailing your Smart repair experience. After reading through it, my case was very similar, kept stalling and the car dashboard went crazy with warning lights. The mechanics found the faulty sensor right away but getting to it was the real hassle. Quick question, do you remember roughly how much you paid for the whole repair? Also, has everything worked fine since the fix? Just wondering if any other car sensors started acting up after this repair was done. Even with all the labor involved in getting to the fuel tank, hopefully, the total cost wasnt too steep. These fuel sensor issues can be tricky to diagnose but at least they are fixable.

Great to hear your mechanics correctly identified the faulty sensor. Since my repair last month, the car dashboard and fuel gauge have been working perfectly with no stalling issues. The total repair cost was 52€ due to a blown fuse, which turned out to be the root cause, much simpler than needing to drop the fuel tank. The car electronics have been stable with no other sensor issues appearing. Looking back, having it properly diagnosed saved a lot of trouble compared to trying quick fixes. No warning lights have returned and the fuel level readings are now consistently accurate. The cost was surprisingly reasonable considering how complex these sensor problems can initially appear. This type of repair proves its worth getting a proper diagnosis rather than assuming the worst-case scenario of needing major fuel tank work.

Thanks for clearing that up. After dealing with this frustrating issue, I finally got it sorted last week. The mechanic charged 780€ total, definitely more than your fuse problem but still better than I expected for the amount of work involved. The car electronics are all working normally now. The level sensor replacement fixed both the stalling and those annoying dashboard warnings. My mechanic had to remove the entire fuel tank which took several hours, but at least they knew exactly what they were doing. No other faulty sensor issues have popped up since the repair. The fuel gauge reads correctly and the engine runs smoothly at idle. While it wasnt cheap, having a proper fix rather than a quick patch job was worth it for the peace of mind.

Having faced similar issues with my 2007 Smart Fortwo CDI, I can confirm fuel level sensor problems are common in these models. The symptoms match exactly, engine stalling at idle and check engine light, combined with erratic fuel gauge readings. The fuel level sensor malfunction usually stems from either corroded wiring in the fuel tank assembly or a failing sensor unit itself. In my case, the car electronics diagnostic revealed both a faulty sensor and damaged wiring harness inside the fuel tank. The repair required dropping the fuel tank to access the complete fuel pump assembly where the level sensor is integrated. The job involved: Draining the fuel tank, Removing the fuel tank, Replacing the complete fuel pump module with sensor, Installing new wiring harness, Resetting the car electronics system This was not a quick fix, the entire repair took several hours due to the location of components. While not the most expensive repair, its complexity makes it important to have it done by someone familiar with Smart fuel systems. The stalling issue completely resolved after the repair, and the fuel gauge began working correctly again. These symptoms should not be ignored as they can lead to more serious fuel delivery problems if left unattended.
