Smart Fortwo Sunroof Fix: Common Problems & Solutions

My Smart Fortwo (2005) is having issues with the sunroof operation. The sunblind remains stuck and wont move in either direction, plus the convertible top is completely unresponsive. The display shows a sunroof not initialized error message. I suspect this needs a proper sunroof calibration or reset procedure, but wanted to check if anyone has dealt with similar symptoms. Has anyone gotten this fixed at a workshop, and what was the actual problem? Looking for real experiences with sunroof troubleshooting on this specific model before taking it in for repairs. Any insight on repair costs would also be helpful.

Had almost the exact same sunroof system issue with my Smart Fortwo Pure (2007). The vehicle sunroof completely stopped working, showing the same error message. Based on some experience working on basic car electronics, I first tried the manual sunroof reset procedure but it did not resolve the problem. Took it to a workshop where they diagnosed it as a control module issue requiring recoding. The sunroof control unit needed proper initialization and coding to restore functionality. Total repair cost was 75€ for the coding work, which fixed both the sunroof operation and sunblind movement. Important to note: the workshop confirmed this is a relatively common issue with the sunroof system in these models. The electronic control unit sometimes loses its programmed settings, causing the initialization error. What trim level is your Fortwo? Also, have you noticed any other electrical issues before the sunroof stopped working? This information could help determine if there might be related problems requiring attention. If you have not tried it yet, you could attempt a basic sunroof reset by holding the close button for 10 seconds, though based on the error message, professional coding might be necessary like in my case.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Current mileage is 147647 KM and I just got the same error today while trying to operate the sunroof. Good to know the sunroof mechanism problem was fixed with control unit recoding in your case. 75€ seems reasonable compared to what I imagined. No other electrical issues noticed before the sunroof system failed. The sunroof calibration process you mentioned did not work when I tried it. Will take it to a workshop for proper diagnosis and recoding of the sunroof control module.

Glad the pricing info helped give you a reference point. Just keep in mind repair costs can vary, mine was straightforward since only the sunroof control module needed attention. Make sure the workshop does a full diagnostic check of the sunroof mechanism and electrical connections too. The high mileage could mean wear on other sunroof components beyond just the control unit. When they repaired mine, they also inspected the tracks and motor as a precaution since these parts can degrade over time and affect proper sunroof operation. One heads up from my experience, after the initial fix, I had the sunroof not initialized error appear again about 6 months later. A quick sunroof reset fixed it that time. The workshop explained this can happen occasionally and showed me how to properly do the reset procedure if it occurs again. Worth asking them to demonstrate this during your repair visit. Let us know how the repair goes. The sunroof troubleshooting process helped identify several common failure points in these models, which could be useful info for others facing similar issues.

Thanks for the additional details. The sunroof troubleshooting information is really helpful and matches what I am experiencing. Your repair experience gives me more confidence about getting it fixed. Will definitely have them check all sunroof mechanism components given the high mileage. Good tip about the potential for the error to return and needing to learn the proper sunroof reset procedure. I will make sure to ask the workshop to demonstrate the correct reset steps for future reference. Will update once I get the sunroof control system repaired and recoded. 75€ plus inspection costs seems fair for resolving the sunroof operation issues. Better to get it checked now before more extensive damage occurs. Booking an appointment with the workshop tomorrow since the basic sunroof calibration attempts were unsuccessful.
