Smart Roadster Door Lock Failure, Repair Help Needed

Having trouble with my Smart Roadster 2004 (1.3L gas, 137000km). The keyless entry stopped working completely and throws an error code. Pretty sure its related to the door mechanism since the door actuator makes weird noises. Any experiences with similar door handle electronics fault? Looking for trustworthy mechanic recommendations since my last repair experience was not great. Want to avoid getting ripped off on the electric door system repair.

Last month had a similar door handle electronics fault on a Smart ForTwo 2007. The keyless entry stopped working when the door sensor issue appeared. The door switch started making grinding sounds, indicating problems with the locking system mechanism. The root cause was a damaged wiring harness where cables running through the door hinge had frayed over time. The constant opening and closing motion wore through the protective sleeve, causing intermittent electrical connection failures in the door handle assembly. This is a known weak point in these models. The repair involved replacing the complete door wiring harness and recalibrating the central locking system. While not a critical safety issue, leaving it unfixed can lead to complete failure of the door electronics and potential security risks. The door actuator noise you describe matches what my car experienced, it typically indicates the system is trying to engage but getting incorrect signals from the damaged wiring or faulty door switch components. Would suggest having a full diagnostic scan done first. The error code will help pinpoint if its truly a wiring issue or a failed door handle sensor module.

You described the exact issue I had with my Smart Roadster a few months back. Same symptoms with the noisy door actuator and keyless entry problems. Got it repaired at a local specialist, they had to replace both the door wiring harness and door handle sensor unit. Just wondering how much your repair ended up costing? And has the electric door system been working properly since the fix? Mine has been fine but occasionally the door switch still feels a bit sticky when pressing.

Just got the repair completed yesterday, it ended up being much simpler than expected. The door electronics issue was resolved by fixing a loose cable connection near the door handle mechanism. Total cost was 95€ for the repair work, which mainly involved reconnecting and securing the wiring properly. The door switch and keyless entry are now working perfectly. No more grinding sounds from the door actuator either. The mechanic mentioned these Smart models often develop connection issues in the door handle electronics due to wire movement, but a proper fix usually solves it permanently. Much better outcome than having to replace the entire door mechanism or wiring harness. If your door switch still feels sticky, might be worth having the mechanic check the physical components of the handle assembly. Sometimes debris can get trapped in there causing that sensation.

Thanks for the helpful info about your Smart repair case. Finally went to get mine checked out last week. The mechanic found worn cables in the door wiring harness plus a faulty sensor in the door handle assembly. Parts and labor came to 320€ total, more than I hoped but less than I feared. The door actuator works smoothly now with no strange noises. Keyless entry is back to normal too. Much better than dealing with manual key entry every time. The only annoying part was waiting 2 days for the special door handle sensor to arrive. Good call about checking both the wiring and sensor components. Saved me from having to go back for a second repair if they had only fixed one part of the problem. The electric door system seems solid now after a proper diagnostic and complete fix.
