SMAX Diesel Injection Issue

I'm experiencing issues with my 2007 Ford SMAX diesel. It's got 174860 km on the clock. Lately, it's been a pain to start, fuel consumption has increased noticeably, and the engine power feels significantly reduced. Idling is uneven, and sometimes the engine even stalls. I suspect a defective injection nozzle, possibly due to dirty injection valves. Has anyone else dealt with this?

I have an SMAX too. Your symptoms sound remarkably similar to a problem I encountered a while back. The poor starting, increased fuel consumption, reduced power, and uneven idling are all telltale signs. It could be a misfire. Have you noticed any particular smell, or unusual sounds from the engine?

Yes, now that you mention it, there is a slight smell of gasoline sometimes, and a kind of 'thumping' sound from the engine. So, you think it's the same issue? Did it also happen suddenly, or was it a gradual decline in performance? I would like to know if there are any tricks before changing the part.

The gasoline smell and the thumping sound certainly point towards an injection issue. I can confirm that I had the same symptoms, and after extensive diagnostics, the issue was indeed traced back to a faulty injection nozzle. Considering the potential complexity of modern diesel injection systems and the precise calibration required, I would strongly recommend taking it to a workshop equipped to handle such repairs. A proper diagnostic assessment and potential replacement of the affected components would be the wisest course of action. You could risk damaging the engine.

Thanks for the insight. I appreciate you confirming my suspicions. I'll take it to a trusted workshop for a proper diagnosis and repair. Turns out it was the injection nozzle, exactly as we thought! Cost me 515€ to get it sorted.
