SMAX Electronic Parking Brake Fault

I have a 2009 Ford SMAX with a gasoline engine, and the electronic parking brake is playing up. The handbrake refuses to engage or disengage, an error is permanently stored, and the warning light is constantly illuminated. It's looking like a defective electric motor in the brake calliper may be to blame. Anyone else experienced this brake fault?

Sounds familiar. I've a Ford SMAX and had similar symptoms. The error codes the mechanic pulled were related to the EPB. Have you checked the brake switch? It's a long shot, but worth ruling out before you start tearing things apart and spending big money.

Thanks for the tip. No, I haven't checked the brake switch yet. Where is it located, and is it something I can test myself without specialized equipment?

It's usually near the brake pedal assembly. Honestly, if you're not sure, I'd suggest getting it checked professionally. With brakes, especially electronic ones, it's really not worth taking risks. In my case, it wasn't the switch, and I had to get the motor replaced at the workshop. Cost me around 500€, if I remember correctly.

Appreciate the insight. Looks like I'll be heading to the workshop. Diagnosis points to a similar repair cost, roughly 505€. Vehicle safety is paramount, of course, so best to get it sorted. Thanks again.
