SMAX Engine Overheating

Has anyone experienced thermal management issues with a 2012 Ford SMAX gasoline? Check engine light is on, and the engine is overheating around 133218 km. I suspect a fault with the active air flap.

Hey! I drive an SMAX too. I had something similar happen a while back. Check engine light and overheating... turned out to be the flap motor. Is the grille shutter stuck open or closed, by any chance? That was my first clue something was up. How much did they quote you for that repair?

Thanks for your insight. I'll check the grille shutter position. Besides the check engine light and overheating, what other symptoms did you experience? What confirmed the flap motor failure?

Well, besides the obvious stuff, I noticed the engine took longer to warm up in colder weather. Honestly, I tried poking around myself, but it was a pain. Ended up taking it to a workshop; they ran diagnostics and confirmed it was the flap motor. Saved myself a headache in the end. Sounds like that's where yours is heading too. You should consider taking it to a workshop for inspection to prevent engine damage.

Understood. I'll schedule an appointment with a reputable workshop for a comprehensive diagnostic assessment of the active air flap system, especially given the potential risk of engine damage. The estimated repair cost I received was around 590€; I'll see if that aligns with their assessment. Thanks again for your time and assistance.
