SMAX Low Coolant Level
Summary of the thread
A 2010 Ford SMAX diesel engine displayed a low coolant level warning and a check engine light, with no visible leaks around the radiator hoses or coolant reservoir. Potential causes considered included a head gasket issue or a problem with the cooling fan. After further inspection, it was discovered that the issue was a minor leak from a hose connection, which was resolved with a simple repair and coolant top-up.

No white smoke that I've noticed, and the engine temperature gauge seems normal, no overheating. Did your SMAX have the same symptoms, even without the overheating? Was the check engine light also on?

Yes, the check engine light was on as well and no overheating detected. After topping it off a couple of times, I'd suggest bringing it to a workshop. It's probably something small, I recommend getting it fixed before it becomes something big and expensive to repair.

Thanks for the advice. I took it to a local shop, and it turned out to be a minor leak from a hose connection, nothing major thankfully. The total repair cost was 52€, including a top-up of the coolant. Appreciate the help!

I had a similar issue with my SMAX. The coolant light kept coming on. Check to see if you have white smoke at any point, especially when you just started the engine. Is your engine overheating?
