Sonata ABS and Steering Issues

I'm pulling my hair out! I have a 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, and lately, it's been a nightmare. The tire pressure low warning keeps popping up, which is annoying enough, but now the ABS lamp lights up too! To top it off, the steering wheel vibrates like crazy, especially at highway speeds, and it feels like I'm fighting the wheel – power steering seems to be failing. I checked the tire pressure with my tire gauge, and they seem inflated. What gives? Could it be the tire monitoring system acting up?

Summary of the thread

A 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid owner is experiencing multiple issues, including a persistent tire pressure warning, an illuminated ABS lamp, and significant steering wheel vibrations, particularly at highway speeds. The problems may be linked to a faulty tire sensor valve, which can affect tire pressure readings and potentially impact the vehicle's stability control systems. The recommended solution is to have the vehicle professionally diagnosed and repaired, as a similar case was resolved by replacing the defective tire sensor valve, restoring normal functionality.

I had something similar happen with my Sonata. The tire sensor might be faulty, especially the valve inside the tire. A defective valve can cause pressure issues that the system picks up, triggering all those warnings. It might also explain the steering problems if it's affecting the car's stability control systems. Has the light come on after inflating your tires?

A faulty valve, huh? I never would have thought of that! So, you're saying a tiny valve could cause all this mayhem? Is there any way to check it myself, or am I better off just taking it to a shop? What did you end up doing when it happened to you?

While there are DIY ways to check for leaks, dealing with tire sensors can be tricky. Given all the symptoms you're describing – ABS light, steering issues – it's probably best to get it professionally diagnosed. I took mine to a local workshop, and they confirmed it was a defective valve in the tire sensor. They replaced the sensor, and everything went back to normal.

Thanks a million for the advice! I took it to my local shop, and you were spot on - defective valve in the tire. They replaced the tire sensor, and it cost me 280€, but now everything is working like new. I'm so glad I asked here before trying to fix it myself!
