Sonata diesel gearbox slipping shifts

My 2018 Hyundai Sonata diesel with 179711 km is exhibiting concerning gearbox behavior. The shifts feel unclean, almost slipping at times. I suspect a transfer case oil wear fault. Could this point to defective gears within the transfer case itself? What diagnostic approaches would you recommend before I brace myself for potentially extensive repairs?

Summary of the thread

A 2018 Hyundai Sonata diesel is experiencing gearbox issues, with shifts feeling unclean and slipping. The suspected cause is a transfer case oil wear fault, potentially due to defective gears within the transfer case. It is recommended to check for oil leakage and consider internal mechanical wear as a probable cause. A thorough inspection at a workshop is advised to confirm the diagnosis and determine the necessary repairs.

I had a similar issue on my Sonata (can't remember the exact year). Have you checked for any signs of oil leakage around the transfer case? Mechanical wear can lead to gear oil degradation, which manifests as shifting problems.

Thank you for your insight! Oil leakage is definitely something I will check. However, assuming there are no visible leaks, how confident are you that the 'mechanical wear leading to gear oil degradation' you mention is indeed internal to the transfer case, and not, say, originating from elsewhere in the drivetrain?

Without a deeper inspection, it's hard to tell for sure. But considering the symptoms and mileage, internal wear is the most probable cause. I would strongly suggest taking it to a workshop for a thorough checkup.

Understood. Your experience confirms my initial fears. I'll book it in for a proper inspection and diagnosis. I have already received a repair estimation of 330€, to replace the defective gears, which hopefully will solve the issue. Thank you for sharing your experience, it has been most helpful!
