Sonata NOx Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2016 Hyundai Sonata hybrid is experiencing a NOx issue, indicated by a check engine light and a strong exhaust smell. The problem could be related to the NOx storage catalyst aging or an exhaust system leak. It is suggested to inspect the exhaust system for leaks, as this could lead to further NOx catalyst issues. The issue was resolved by fixing an exhaust system leak at a workshop.

Good question! I haven't really noticed a drop in performance, to be honest. It's mainly the smell that's got me worried, plus the check engine light glaring at me. Could it really be just the smell?

It's possible, but unlikely to just be the smell with the check engine light on. With those symptoms, I'd suggest getting the exhaust system checked for leaks ASAP. That could lead to NOx catalyst issues, and it's best to address it early before it causes more damage. Consider a workshop visit.

Man, I appreciate the advice. You nailed it! Took it to the shop, and turns out there was a leak in the exhaust system. Cost me 265€ to get it fixed. Thanks!

I had something similar with my Sonata. Is the car's performance also affected, or are you just noticing the smell and the light?
