Sonic diesel DPF exhaust pressure too low
Summary of the thread
A 2019 Chevrolet Sonic with a diesel engine experienced a warning light, reduced engine power, excessive smoke, and a strong exhaust smell. The OBD scan indicated "Diesel particulate filter exhaust pressure too low," suggesting a potential issue with the exhaust back pressure sensor. The problem was resolved by replacing the defective sensor and performing a forced DPF regeneration, restoring the vehicle's performance.

To be honest, I'm not sure if the DPF regeneration was working right. I never really paid attention to it. How can I tell if it was working or not before this low pressure problem?

Yeah, that was my problem too, I never paid attention to regeneration cycles. Then things went south very quickly. I'd take it to a workshop if I were you. It could be a blocked DPF and in any case without the correct diagnostic tools it is difficult to say.

Thanks for the advice! I took it to the workshop, and you were spot on. Turned out the exhaust back pressure sensor was defective. New sensor installed and they ran a forced DPF regeneration. Total cost 245€. Now it's running like new again!

That sounds rough! I had a similar thing happen with my old Citroen C4 Picasso a few years back. Kept getting weird DPF warnings and eventually it felt like it was running on three cylinders. Was the DPF regeneration working properly before all this started?
