Spacefox VANOS Issue Causing Fuel Waste and Power Loss

My Spacefox started showing a check engine light recently and fuel economy has gotten much worse, burning about 15% more fuel than usual. The engine feels less responsive too, especially at lower RPMs. Watching some repair videos, symptoms point to inlet VANOS failure, but my last mechanic visit was not great and I want to be prepared before going in. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms in their 2012 1.6L gasoline Spacefox? Mine has 130000km on the clock. Looking for repair experiences and rough cost estimates before choosing where to take it.
