Thanks for the reply. When you say 'affected components', which ones should I be focusing on? I'm not really sure where to start looking, and I don't want to mess something up even more.

Given the symptoms and error code, it would be prudent to inspect the engine control module (ECM) and any related sensors within the cooling system. However, considering your stated level of expertise, I would recommend consulting a qualified technician for a comprehensive diagnostic assessment. Continuing to operate the vehicle in its current state may cause additional damage.

Okay, I appreciate the advice. Sounds like it's best to leave it to the professionals. Took it to the workshop, turned out a cable to the coolant sensor was defective. They replaced it, cleared the code and all the symptoms are gone now. Cost me 95€.

Based on the information provided, a control unit communication error, in conjunction with the overheating and coolant spill, does suggest a potential issue with the vehicle's data link or a related connectivity problem. Have you checked the cable and plug connections of the affected components for any visible damage or corrosion?
