Sprinter brake light switch and infotainment issues

My 2003 Mercedes Sprinter, gasoline engine, at 271965 km, presents a curious fault. The error memory logs a brake light switch issue, the brake lights themselves are failing intermittently, and the infotainment system throws an error message. I've checked the obvious: bulbs are fine. Could a faulty brake light switch genuinely cause such widespread issues, or am I looking at a deeper electrical problem? I suspect a user error might have triggered it, but I'm unsure where to begin diagnosing this further. Any insights would be appreciated before I start probing deeper into the vehicle safety systems.

Whoa, sounds familiar! I had a somewhat similar thing happen on my Sprinter, though I can't recall the exact year. The tail light situation was driving me nuts. Brake lights would work sometimes, sometimes not. The error message flashing was super annoying. Did you check the connection to the switch itself? I'm no expert, but my mechanic mentioned something about those connections getting wonky over time. Also, are you absolutely SURE it's the brake light switch and not something else related to the vehicle safety?

Thanks for the quick reply. Regarding the connection, are you referring to the physical connector to the switch, or the wiring further downstream? I've visually inspected the connector for corrosion, but haven't load-tested the wires themselves. And yes, I'm reasonably certain it's the brake light switch, as that's the specific fault code being reported. However, I'm open to the possibility of misdiagnosis given the multiple symptoms.

Yeah, I meant the connector mostly. My guy said the pins can get loose or corroded, causing intermittent contact. Honestly, if you're getting a specific code pointing to the switch and you've checked the bulbs, it's probably the switch. Still, with electrical gremlins, you never know. If you're not totally comfortable diving in, maybe a quick trip to the workshop for a proper diagnostic is the safest bet. They can confirm the issue and replace the switch quickly.

Appreciate the advice. Turns out, it was the brake light switch. Disconnected and reconnected it and the problem disappeared immediately, so user error. It seems like a simple disconnect/reconnect fixed it without switch replacement. The error code is gone, brake lights are functioning normally, and the infotainment system is quiet. Repair cost: 0€ Thanks again for the insights!
