Sprinter engine issues resolved

My 2006 Mercedes Sprinter with a gasoline engine has a check engine light. It's got about 76155 km on it. I'm pretty sure it's the MAF sensor. I've noticed a significant increase in fuel consumption, the engine sometimes stalls when idling, and there's some smoke when I accelerate. I've checked the air filter, and it seems clean. Could a faulty MAF sensor really cause all these issues? I'm thinking it's messing with the air-fuel ratio.

I had similar symptoms on my Mercedes. Not a Sprinter, but it was indeed the MAF sensor. The check engine light came on, and the car was running rough. Have you tried checking the sensor's wiring and connections? Sometimes a loose connection can trigger those symptoms. Also, did you notice any changes after cleaning the air filter?

Thanks for the input. I did check the wiring, and it seems okay, no obvious damage or loose connections. The air filter was clean, so no change there. When you say 'running rough,' do you mean stalling at idle too? Was your fuel consumption also affected?

Yes, stalling at idle was one of the issues. The fuel consumption was definitely worse. Given that you've checked the wiring and the air filter is clean, it's likely the MAF sensor itself has failed. It might be worth getting it diagnosed properly at a workshop to confirm before replacing it.

Appreciate the help. Took it to a workshop, and you were spot on. It was the MAF sensor. The replacement cost me 365€. Everything's running smoothly now.
