Sprinter Engine Troubles Fuel Pump or Something Else
Summary of the thread
A 2004 Mercedes Sprinter with a gasoline engine is experiencing starting issues, stalling at idle, rough idling, and excessive fuel consumption, with the check engine light indicating a fuel pump error. The owner suspects a faulty fuel pump but notes a corroded electrical connector. Suggestions include checking the fuel filter and addressing the corroded connector, as electrical faults could cause these symptoms. Ultimately, a mechanic identified and fixed a bad connection at the fuel pump, resolving the issues.

Thanks for the suggestion. I hadn't considered the fuel filter. How do I replace it? Also, the error code refers to a fuel pump electrical fault. Could a corroded connector really cause all these problems? Could a faulty fuel injector trigger the error code?

Replacing the fuel filter is usually straightforward, often located in the fuel line or near the fuel tank. Plenty of videos online show you how. Yes, a corroded connector could definitely cause these issues. Since the error code points to an electrical fault in the fuel pump circuit, focus on that first. Clean the connector with electrical contact cleaner and see if that helps. If that doesn't fix it, I'd recommend getting it properly diagnosed at a workshop before replacing the pump. You don't want to waste money on a new pump if it's just a wiring issue.

I appreciate the advice. Cleaning the contacts didn't solve it, so I took it to a mechanic. It was a bad connection at the fuel pump, just like I suspected. They charged me 95€ to fix the wiring, and all my problems are gone. Thanks again for the input.

I had a similar issue with my old Ford Focus, but it had a diesel engine. Same symptoms, engine stalling and check engine light. It turned out to be a clogged fuel filter. Have you checked that? A clogged filter restricts fuel flow, affecting performance. It's cheaper than replacing the pump. What error code are you getting?
