Sprinter lighting issue troubleshooting advice

I'm experiencing a lighting issue with my 2000 Mercedes Sprinter, gasoline engine. The lights are switching on erratically, and an error is stored in the error memory. I suspect a faulty light switch. Could this be related to a defective cable or plug connection? Any suggestions on troubleshooting, perhaps around the dimmer switch or headlight switch? Is there a common issue with the fuse box or dashboard lights that might be connected?

I see. I have a Sprinter as well, though a slightly newer model. I experienced similar problems with the lights behaving oddly. Have you tried wiggling the light switch itself? I would also check the connections to the fuse box, as a loose connection there could also cause this. It might be worth checking the dimmer switch too, as that can sometimes cause intermittent issues. Are you certain it's the light switch and not perhaps a ground issue somewhere?

Thank you for your response. I have wiggled the switch but observed no change. When you experienced this, were the symptoms exactly the same – lights switching on without input? Where exactly did you find the problematic connection? Was it near the light switch itself, or closer to the fuse box?

In my case, the lights were indeed switching on intermittently, yes. It was difficult to pinpoint. I confess I didn't resolve it myself; I took it to a workshop. They traced it to a faulty connection, as it turned out, near the light switch. But I would still suggest checking your connections, as you might get lucky.

I appreciate the confirmation and advice. I will thoroughly inspect the connections near the light switch. If I am unsuccessful, I will schedule a workshop appointment. The diagnostic cost was around 95€, but I’d prefer to avoid it if possible. Thank you for your help.
