Sprinter transmission oil pressure sensor fault

My 2012 Mercedes Sprinter, gasoline engine, with a mere 6854 km, exhibits a transmission oil pressure sensor fault. The engine warning light illuminates, an error is stored, and the gearbox is in emergency mode, occasionally slipping and producing grinding noises. I suspect a low gearbox oil level. Has anyone experienced this?

Sounds like a party of problems! Low oil level is definitely the first suspect. Think of it like your Sprinter is trying to run a marathon on an empty stomach. Before you panic, check that oil level yourself. Is there any visible leakage? If the level is fine, the pressure sensor or pressure gauge could be faulty. It's like the messenger is delivering the wrong information. Any recent work done on the transmission?

No recent work has been performed. Assuming the oil level is within acceptable parameters, how can I ascertain whether the pressure sensor or pressure gauge is the root cause and not some other underlying transmission fault?

If the oil level's correct, and there's no obvious damage, it's time to get diagnostic equipment involved. You're beyond a simple visual check. Think of it as needing a stethoscope for your Sprinter. You would need to go to a workshop to have that checked. They can read the sensor data and perform a more in-depth analysis. Don't keep driving it in that emergency mode, you'll cause even more damage.

I appreciate the insights. Following your advice, I had the vehicle diagnosed at a workshop. The oil level was indeed low, and the pressure sensor was reporting incorrect data due to that. Cost of repair, including top-up and sensor replacement, amounted to 365€ Thank you.
