SQ8 Turbo Failure Warning Signs, Check These Symptoms

Looking for advice on my 2019 Audi SQ8 diesel (170k km) which seems to have turbo/boost issues. Check engine light is on and the car feels seriously underpowered. There is a distinct whistling and hissing sound under acceleration. Fuel economy has taken a hit and it occasionally stalls at idle. My local mechanic previously misdiagnosed a similar issue which cost me quite a bit. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms? Wondering if this points to a faulty boost pressure sensor or intercooler problems. Would appreciate hearing about your experiences and recommendations for getting it properly fixed.

Had similar symptoms on my 2016 Audi Q7 TDI. The whistling sound combined with power loss turned out to be a defective wastegate actuator. The wastegate wasnt opening properly under load, causing inconsistent boost pressure and triggering the check engine light. The initial diagnosis pointed to the MAP sensor, but after proper testing, the real culprit was the wastegate mechanism. When the wastegate fails to regulate boost pressure correctly, it creates exactly those symptoms, poor fuel economy, drop in power, and that distinctive whistling noise during acceleration. The repair involved replacing the entire wastegate assembly. This is a serious issue that can lead to further turbo damage if left unattended. The excessive turbo lag and stalling at idle are clear indicators of boost control problems. Would recommend getting it diagnosed at a shop with proper diagnostic equipment for turbo systems. The symptoms match typical wastegate failure patterns, especially considering the vehicle mileage. This isnt something that can be fixed with simple sensor replacement, it requires proper mechanical intervention.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the wastegate issue. The symptoms you described match mine exactly, especially that whistling noise and the sudden power loss when the turbocharger tries to spool up. How much did the complete wastegate assembly replacement end up costing you? Just want to get a rough idea of what to expect. Also curious if the repair fully resolved the boost pressure problems or if youve had any related issues since?

After getting the wastegate assembly replaced by a certified shop, the turbocharger system works perfectly again. The total repair cost came to 860 Euro, including parts and labor. The whistling noise disappeared completely, and the turbo response is back to normal with no more boost pressure issues. The repair involved a complete wastegate valve replacement since the original unit was failing to regulate boost pressure properly. This fixed both the power delivery problems and the poor fuel economy. The turbo lag is gone, and the engine maintains stable idle without stalling. For anyone facing similar symptoms, waiting too long can damage the turbocharger itself, which would be much more expensive to replace. The MAP sensor readings now show normal boost levels, confirming the repair was successful. The throttle body response is crisp again, just like when the car was new. Its been six months since the repair, and the boost control system continues to work flawlessly with no recurring issues. The investment was worth it to restore proper turbocharger function and prevent more extensive damage.

I took my car to a certified shop last week after our discussion here. You were absolutely right, it was indeed the wastegate causing all the problems. The repair cost me 920 Euro, slightly more than your experience, but worth every cent. The difference in performance is remarkable. The turbocharger now spools up smoothly, no more whistling sounds, and the engine runs perfectly at idle. The check engine light cleared up immediately after the repair. Most importantly, my fuel economy is back to normal. The mechanic showed me the old wastegate assembly, and it was clearly worn out. They explained how this could have eventually damaged the entire turbocharger if left unfixed. The throttle response is now crisp and immediate, just as it should be. Really glad I got this sorted quickly based on your advice rather than spending more time and money on incorrect diagnoses. The car feels like new again, and I havent had a single issue since the repair.
