By 'gear wear' I mean mechanical wear and tear on the gears inside your transfer case. If left unattended, it can lead to complete failure, so get it to a workshop.

Thanks for the clarification and advice. After inspection, you were correct about the transfer case. The repair cost 330€.

I have a Stepwgn, and I had similar issues. It's quite possible you're experiencing gear wear. Has the oil been checked recently? Gear grinding is a good indicator of oil wear.
