Stilo Jerking Acceleration

I'm experiencing difficulties with my 2005 Fiat Stilo diesel. At 160108 km, the engine exhibits jerking during acceleration, accompanied by a stored error code and the check engine light. I've also observed reduced engine power, occasional stalling at idle, rough engine running, and a strong exhaust smell. Preliminary diagnostics suggest a potential intake manifold issue. Any insights?

Summary of the thread

A 2005 Fiat Stilo diesel is experiencing jerking during acceleration, reduced engine power, stalling at idle, rough running, and a strong exhaust smell, with a check engine light and error code. The core problem is suspected to be an intake manifold issue, potentially due to leaks or scorching, affecting the air/fuel mixture. Suggested solutions include inspecting the manifold for leaks or damage, possibly using carb cleaner to detect changes in idle, and considering professional repair if necessary.

Sounds very familiar. I've got a Stilo as well. Those symptoms scream intake manifold problems, especially the jerking and the smell. Have you checked for any obvious leaks or cracks around the manifold? My guess is it's probably scorched and letting air in where it shouldn't be. That would definitely throw off your air/fuel mixture and cause all those issues.

Could you elaborate on the specific location of the leaks you encountered and any diagnostic procedures you employed to confirm the issue?

On mine, the worst of the scorching was on the underside of the manifold, pretty hard to spot without taking it off. I initially tried spraying carb cleaner around the manifold while the engine was running to see if the idle changed, which indicates a leak. But honestly, the best way to be sure is to remove the manifold and inspect it properly. Given the symptoms and error code, I'd say it's highly likely that's your problem. I would just take it to a workshop at this point to get it checked and fixed.

I appreciate your detailed explanation and guidance. I will proceed with a thorough inspection of the intake manifold, and, if necessary, seek professional assistance for its replacement. Your insights have been invaluable. It turned out to be exactly as you described. The repair set me back 1180€.
