Stilo rough running exhaust leak
Summary of the thread
A 2001 Fiat Stilo with a gasoline engine is experiencing rough running, a check engine light, and jerking during acceleration. The initial suspicion is a timing belt issue or rough idle. However, a suggestion to check for an exhaust leak, particularly near the exhaust manifold, is made, as such leaks can affect oxygen sensor readings and fuel mixture. Upon inspection, a crack in the exhaust system is found and repaired, resolving the issue.

Exhaust leak, huh? Where exactly should I be looking? Is there a particular spot on the exhaust that's prone to cracking? And would that cause the jerking too? I was also thinking about maybe the fuel injectors or the spark plugs?

Yeah, the jerking can definitely be linked. For me, it was a small crack near one of the joints in the exhaust manifold. I'd say, take it to a workshop to get it checked out properly. They'll be able to pinpoint it quickly with a smoke test. Save yourself the headache!

You nailed it! Took it to the shop, and you were spot on – exhaust leak! They found a crack and welded it up. Cost me 265€, but she's running smooth now. Thanks!

Sounds familiar! I had similar issues with my Stilo. Check your exhaust system for leaks. A tiny crack can cause all sorts of mayhem, messing with the oxygen sensor readings and throwing the whole fuel mixture off.
