Strange noises and shifting problems in the 2012 Benz ML Class

Hi guys, I'm having a bit of trouble with my 2012 Benz ML Class, which now has 59156 kilometers on the clock and is behaving a bit strangely. The gearshift is stuck, there is a strange grinding noise when changing gear and a whining or grinding noise. I think it could be a malfunction of the torque converter lock-up clutch. Has anyone gone through the same thing and can perhaps give me a tip on how they solved this with their mechanic? Unfortunately I had no luck last time... Thanks in advance!

Summary of the thread

A 2012 Benz ML Class is experiencing gearshift issues, strange grinding noises when changing gears, and whining or grinding sounds, possibly due to a malfunctioning torque converter lock-up clutch. A similar issue in a 2015 Benz G-Class was resolved by replacing the automatic transmission torque converter, which is a serious problem that affects driving experience. The suggested solution is to have the torque converter checked and potentially replaced by a mechanic to prevent further complications.

Hi, I had similar problems with my 2015 Benz G-Class. It was actually the automatic transmission converter that was faulty. If the gearshift is stuck and the strange noises occur, it's quite typical. My mechanic had to replace the torque converter. It's definitely a serious issue that can't be ignored as it can change the entire driving experience. Goodbye!

Hey, that sounds like a tricky issue with your ML-Class! It seems that you have exactly the same problem as my colleague here with the G-Class. Do you remember how much you paid for the repair back then? And have you noticed anything else since replacing the converter? Thanks for your help!

Hey, yes, that really was quite a number. So, replacing the automatic transmission torque converter cost me a hefty €2120 at the time. But since the visit to the mechanic, the malfunction of the torque converter lock-up clutch has been rectified and the Benz drives like a dream again. Nothing else has come up since then. So I would say definitely get it checked before it gets more serious. Good luck with that for all I care!

Hey, thanks for the quick replies guys! Not exactly the news I wanted to hear, but at least now I know what to expect. Over €2000 for a repair is really a hefty price, but good to know it should be solved afterwards. Off to the mechanic then. Thanks again for your help and have a nice day!
