Stream exhaust fumes and rough running
Summary of the thread
A 2003 Honda Stream is experiencing rough running, a check engine light, and noticeable exhaust fumes, indicating a potential exhaust leak. The problem may be linked to a defective lambda sensor, which can disrupt the fuel mixture, causing these symptoms. It is recommended to have the vehicle checked by a workshop to confirm the diagnosis and address the issue.

The smell is definitely worse when the engine is cold. I took a quick look under the car, but couldn't see exactly where the leak is coming from. The exhaust pipe looks okay at a glance. Fuel consumption does seem a bit higher than usual now that you mention it. What was the cause on your Stream?

Okay, the worse smell when cold definitely points towards something exhaust-related before the catalytic converter gets up to temp. My issue turned out to be a defective lambda sensor. It messed up the fuel mixture, which caused the rough running, the smell, and eventually triggered the check engine light. You might want to get it checked by a workshop. They can diagnose it properly and tell you for sure.

Thanks for the advice! I'll take it to a workshop and get the lambda sensor checked. Will let you know what happens. It was indeed the lambda sensor; cost me 375€ to get it fixed.

Hey, I had something similar happen with my Stream. Check engine light, rough running, and a strong exhaust smell are not good signs. Is the smell constant, or does it get worse when the engine is cold? Have you looked under the car to try and pinpoint the exhaust leak? It could be a cracked exhaust pipe, or something related to the catalytic converter. Has your fuel consumption gone up? It could be a defective lambda sensor...
