Stuck Phaeton Sunshade Repair Guide & Cost Insights

Need advice on car sunshade problems, worried about mechanic visit. My Phaeton from 2001 (gas engine, 20635km) started acting up. The electric UV protection sunblind is completely stuck and wont move either way. Already checked the car computer and found some error codes stored. Last mechanic visit wasnt great so Im looking for experiences from others who had similar interior accessory issues. Anyone dealt with a faulty car blind system before? What was the repair cost and time needed to fix it? Thanks for any input.

Had the same sunblind issue on my 2004 VW Touareg V8. The UV protection sunblind system completely failed, showing similar symptoms, no movement and error codes. The main problem turned out to be more complex than initially thought. The sunshade repair required removing most of the headliner to access the motor assembly. The original motor had worn internal gears and damaged wiring connections to the control module. This was a serious repair job because accessing the car blind mechanism meant carefully dismantling multiple interior components. The motor replacement and recalibration of the sunblind system took nearly a full day at the garage. Beyond just the faulty motor, they found the car interior wiring harness had some heat damage, which is common in these models. If left unaddressed, this could have caused other electrical issues with the car blind system later. Worth checking if your motor makes any noise when trying to operate. If you hear clicking or grinding, its likely the same motor failure. Would suggest having it properly diagnosed at a specialist familiar with VW electrical systems.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the UV protection sunshade repair. My situation seems very similar and Im glad to know what might be causing it. Just curious, could you share what the total repair cost was for your Touareg? Also, how has the window visor system been holding up since the fix? My main concern is spending a lot on repairs only to have the car sunshade fail again in a few months. The interior wiring issue you mentioned is especially concerning. Did you end up having to replace the entire harness or just repair the damaged sections? Really appreciate the detailed insight as Im trying to decide whether to attempt this repair or just live without the sunblind function.

Great to provide an update on the sunshade repair situation. The motor replacement for the UV protection sunblind was completed last week, costing 330€ for parts and labor. The car interior electrical wiring only needed minor repairs, no full harness replacement required. The sunblind system now operates perfectly smooth and quiet. Six months after the fix, the car sunshade continues working flawlessly with no signs of the previous issues. The repair shop properly tested all the connections and recalibrated the system, which seems to have prevented any reoccurrence. For peace of mind, they also checked surrounding components while the headliner was removed. This thorough inspection helped ensure no other potential problems were lurking in the sunshade mechanism. The investment was worth it for maintaining proper UV protection and interior comfort. Much better than leaving it non-functional or risking further electrical complications down the line. Based on this experience, would definitely recommend getting it properly repaired rather than living without it.

Thanks for the advice. Finally got my sunshade issue resolved at a new mechanic. The car blind motor was indeed shot, just as suggested. Total repair came to 280€ including labor. The mechanic found the sun visor control module had water damage from a small leak near the sunroof. Once they fixed both issues, the car interior electrical systems started working normally again. Whole repair took about 4 hours, they had to remove several panels to access the window visor mechanism but did a clean job putting everything back together. Much better experience than my previous mechanic visits. Really glad I didnt put this off any longer. The UV protection works perfectly now and no more worrying about additional electrical problems. Worth every cent to have it working properly again.
