Subaru Power Steering Failure Warning Signs & Symptoms

My steering wheel started shaking badly and feels loose when driving. The steering requires way more force than usual and I got an error code from the diagnostic tool. I suspect the power steering system is failing. The steering pump makes unusual noises and the handling feels spongy overall. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms? Looking for advice before heading to a mechanic since my last repair experience wasnt great. Car details: 2008 Subaru Exiga, gas engine, 75871km.

Had the same issue on a 2011 Subaru Legacy last winter. The symptoms match exactly what you describe, heavy steering, shaking wheel, and error codes pointing to the power steering system. The steering pump was making a whining noise, especially during low-speed turns. After inspection, it turned out the power steering wiring harness had deteriorated connections, causing intermittent power delivery to the hydraulic steering pump. The loose connection was making the pump struggle and operate inconsistently. This is a serious safety concern that needs immediate attention. Poor steering response can lead to loss of control, particularly during emergency maneuvers. When the electric power steering system fails, the steering effort increases dramatically. The fix required: Testing the power steering pump, Replacing the damaged wiring harness, Checking hydraulic fluid levels, Recalibrating the steering rack sensors This is not a DIY job, proper diagnostic equipment is needed to ensure the steering system works correctly after repairs. The steering rack and pump need to be in sync for optimal performance. Would strongly recommend getting this checked by a qualified mechanic familiar with Subaru power steering systems.

Thanks for the detailed response. My issue got fixed about 6 months ago and the steering wheel operates smoothly now. The mechanic found that the hydraulic fluid was contaminated and had damaged the steering pump, requiring a full replacement. The steering rack also needed adjustment since the worn pump had put extra stress on it. Did you track how much you ended up paying for your repair? Just curious to compare costs. Also wondering if youve had any steering related problems since getting it fixed?

Thanks for asking about the repair costs. After seeing the mechanic, my power steering issues were completely resolved. The problem turned out simpler than initially feared, just a faulty cable connection to the electric steering system that needed fixing. The total repair came to 95€, which was a relief compared to a full pump replacement. The steering wheel now turns smoothly with no more unusual resistance or shaking. No steering-related problems have occurred since the repair. The wheel alignment was also checked during the service to ensure the steering system was working optimally. Your repair sounds more extensive with the hydraulic fluid contamination and pump replacement. These steering system components can be quite sensitive, so proper maintenance is crucial for preventing future issues. Makes sense they also adjusted the steering rack given the extra wear from the damaged pump.

Had my repair done at a local shop and it cost me 650€ total, quite a bit more than yours since they had to replace the entire pressure hose system along with the pump. The contaminated fluid had done quite a bit of damage throughout the steering column. The mechanic showed me the old parts and I could see why the steering wheel had been shaking so badly. The pump was completely worn out and the fluid was full of metal particles. They also found the steering rack needed realignment due to all the stress from the failing pump. Its been working perfectly for 6 months now, no more shaking or resistance when turning. The steering feels tight and responsive again, just like when the car was new. Definitely worth the cost to have it fixed properly. Made me realize I should pay more attention to regular power steering maintenance to avoid similar issues in the future.
