Sunny Heavy Steering ESP Light

I'm having trouble with my 2003 Nissan Sunny diesel. It's got about 190,000 km on the clock. Recently, I've noticed the steering has become much heavier, almost like the power steering is failing intermittently. Also, the steering wheel vibrates quite a bit sometimes. Could this be related to the electronic stability or traction control? Anyone experienced similar alignment problems?

Summary of the thread

A 2003 Nissan Sunny diesel with 190,000 km is experiencing heavy steering and occasional steering wheel vibrations, possibly linked to the electronic stability program (ESP) light flickering. The issue is suspected to be related to a faulty steering angle sensor, which affects the power steering assist by providing incorrect data to the ESP system. The recommended solution is to have the sensor checked and potentially replaced at a workshop, which resolved the problem in this case.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

I've got a Sunny too, and those vibrating/shaking steering wheel symptoms sound familiar. Did this start happening after any work on the steering column, or any alignment changes? It could be sensor failure. Have you had any warning lights on the dash?

No recent work or alignment changes. And yes, now that you mention it, I've seen the ESP light flicker occasionally. Could it really be something as simple as a faulty sensor? What does that have to do with the heavy steering?

Well, a faulty steering angle sensor can definitely cause those symptoms. The ESP system relies on that sensor to know which way you're steering. If the coding of the steering angle sensor is faulty, it can mess with the power steering assist. I'd suggest getting it checked out at a workshop – they can probably diagnose it quickly. Cost me around 195€.

Thanks for the insight! Sounds like I'm heading to the workshop then. Turns out it was indeed the steering angle sensor, and the coding was faulty as you suggested. Replaced it, and all is well. Thanks again!
