SupraIV Transmission Failure
Summary of the thread
A 2023 Toyota SupraIV is experiencing transmission issues, including slipping, unclean shifts, and a grinding noise, with both the check engine and transmission lights on. The problem is suspected to be related to the torque converter, specifically the lock-up clutch, as indicated by a generic 'transmission malfunction' error code. It is advised to check the fluid level and condition, but the issue likely requires professional diagnosis and repair. A similar case was resolved by replacing the torque converter, and it is recommended to address the issue promptly to avoid further damage.

The error code was generic, 'transmission malfunction'. I suspected the torque converter. Could you elaborate on your experience? How did you resolve the issue, and how much did the repair cost?

My experience was similar. The error code was vague. After investigation, it was diagnosed as a defective torque converter. Based on the grinding and slipping, I recommend taking it to a reputable workshop. Continuing to drive it could cause further damage. I ended up having the torque converter replaced. Given the cost of parts and labor, it is not cheap, but avoid further damages to the transmission.

Thanks for sharing your experience! It confirms my fears. I will take it to a trusted workshop ASAP. They confirmed the automatic transmission converter was defective and quoted a repair cost of 2120€. I'm scheduling the repair for next week. Thanks again for your help!

That sounds familiar. I had a similar issue with my SupraIV, though not a 2023 model. The slipping and grinding suggest a converter fault, specifically with the lock-up clutch. Did the error code point to anything specific regarding the transmission or torque converter? Check the fluid level and condition, though I suspect it's beyond a simple fluid issue.
