T-Cross Diesel: Power Loss and Rough Running Issues

My T-Cross diesel (2020, 65k km) is acting up with power loss and rough running. The check engine light is on and the engine jerks during acceleration, sometimes even stalling at idle. There is also a strong exhaust smell. The last mechanic visit was not great, and I suspect a faulty manifold or manifold pressure issues. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms? Would be great to hear what the issue was in your case and how much the repair ended up costing. Want to be better prepared before heading to a new mechanic.

Had a similar situation with a 2017 T-Roc diesel. The symptoms matched exactly, power loss, engine misfire, and that distinct exhaust smell in the cabin. After inspection, it turned out the intake manifold gasket was severely degraded, causing a significant leak. The manifold sensor readings were erratic due to incorrect pressure measurements from the leak. The scorching around the gasket area indicated it had been leaking for some time, affecting engine performance and causing those jerking movements during acceleration. This proved to be a serious issue requiring immediate attention. Left unfixed, it would have led to increased fuel consumption, potential engine damage, and failing emissions tests. The repair involved replacing the entire intake manifold assembly since the old one showed signs of warping from heat exposure. The manifold pressure issues also caused the engine control unit to receive incorrect readings, explaining the check engine light and rough running. The stalling at idle happens because the engine cant maintain proper air-fuel mixture with a leaking manifold. A proper diagnosis using pressure testing equipment will quickly confirm if your symptoms are indeed manifold-related. Worth noting that manifold gasket leaks often occur gradually, which is why the performance deterioration might have seemed subtle at first.

Thanks for sharing your T-Roc experience. My mechanic also diagnosed manifold pressure problems with my VW last spring after similar symptoms. The gasket leak was pretty obvious once they did the pressure test. Would be interested to hear how much the manifold repair cost in your case and if everything has been running smoothly since the fix? My car has been fine but wonder if these issues tend to come back.

Finally got this sorted last month, the intake manifold was indeed defective and had to be completely replaced. The manifold sensor readings are now stable and engine performance is back to normal with no more exhaust smells or jerking. The total repair came to 1180€, including parts and labor. The scorching had damaged the manifold beyond just needing a new gasket, which is why the entire unit needed replacement. Since the fix, the engine runs perfectly smooth with no signs of manifold pressure issues or misfires. Its been great having proper power delivery again, especially during acceleration. The engine control unit shows no error codes and idle is rock steady. Based on the mechanics feedback, these manifold problems rarely return if properly fixed with quality parts, so you should be good for the long run too. The investment was worth it to prevent further engine damage and restore proper performance. These issues typically dont reoccur when addressed with a complete repair rather than just patching the gasket leak.

Thanks everyone for the insights. Just wanted to share how my repair went since many asked. Took it to a new mechanic who actually spent time diagnosing the problem properly. The manifold pressure test confirmed a major air intake leak causing the engine misfire. The full repair included replacing the manifold assembly and gaskets, coming to 990€ total. What a difference, no more check engine light, jerky acceleration is gone, and the exhaust smell has completely disappeared. The engine runs smooth as silk now, even at idle. Really glad I got a second opinion instead of letting the first mechanic keep guessing. The new shop showed me the damaged parts and explained everything clearly. Been driving for about 2 weeks since the fix with zero issues. Feels like a completely different car now, responsive and powerful again. Hopefully this helps others facing similar symptoms. Getting that proper initial diagnosis really made all the difference in fixing it right the first time.
