T-Roc Check Engine + Jerky Acceleration Warning Signs

My nearly new T-Roc started acting up with jerky acceleration and the check engine light just came on. The error code was stored but I have trust issues with mechanics after a recent bad experience. Running on gasoline with 39144km. Could this be a faulty oxygen sensor or spark plugs? Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms and can recommend what to check first? Not sure if this is a serious issue or something simple that needs replacing.

Had similar symptoms with a Golf GTI from the same generation. The jerky acceleration combined with check engine light pointed to a failing oxygen sensor, which was causing incorrect fuel mixture readings. The symptoms started gradually, first noticed rough idle, then the engine would misfire during acceleration. The faulty O2 sensor was making the engine run rich, damaging the catalytic converter over time. This is a serious issue that needs prompt attention since it affects both performance and emissions. The repair involved: Complete diagnostic scan, Testing oxygen sensor voltage outputs, Checking fuel injectors for proper spray pattern, Inspecting spark plug condition, Replacing upstream O2 sensor Important to note that ignoring oxygen sensor issues can lead to catalytic converter failure, which becomes much more expensive to fix. The symptoms you describe match almost exactly what happened with my car. Would strongly recommend getting it checked by a certified shop that specializes in VW diagnostics. The fix restored normal acceleration, eliminated the rough idle, and resolved the check engine light. Fuel economy also improved noticeably after the repair.

Thanks for sharing that detailed experience. I had very similar issues with my T-Roc last year. The symptoms you described match exactly what happened, jerky acceleration and check engine light. Turned out my spark plugs were completely worn and one ignition coil was faulty. Did you remember roughly how much the repair cost in your case? My total bill came to around 380€ including parts and labor. Also wondering if youve had any other issues pop up since getting it fixed? Always good to know what to watch out for with these engines.

Since getting the O2 sensor replaced, my T-Roc has been running smoothly with no uneven engine running issues. The total repair came to 265€, which included fixing an unexpected exhaust leak they discovered during inspection. This was actually less than your repair cost with the spark plugs and ignition coil. The car has been performing great for the past 8 months, better fuel economy and much smoother acceleration. No check engine lights or other issues have appeared. Regular maintenance schedule is key though, I keep a close eye on the timing belt and fuel pump service intervals to prevent future problems. The rough idle completely disappeared after the repair, and the engine response is now crisp and predictable. The mechanic mentioned these symptoms are fairly common in these engines when the oxygen sensor starts failing.

After my initial concerns about mechanics, I finally took my T-Roc to a certified shop that specializes in diagnostics. The engine misfire turned out to be worse than expected, both a faulty ignition coil and deteriorated spark plugs were causing the rough idle. The repair process was straightforward: Full diagnostic scan, Air filter inspection, Spark plug replacement, New ignition coil installation, Test drive to confirm fix Total cost came to 380€, which seemed fair given the parts and labor involved. The car runs perfectly now, no more jerky acceleration or check engine lights. Fuel economy has actually improved quite a bit too. Looking back, I should have addressed this sooner instead of worrying about mechanic trust issues. Letting these problems go unchecked could have led to more expensive repairs down the line. Glad to have found a reliable shop that explained everything clearly and fixed it right the first time. The whole experience taught me not to ignore warning signs like rough idle or engine performance issues, even on newer vehicles. Regular maintenance checks are definitely worth the investment.
