T-Roc Diesel Performance Loss Points to DPF Problems

Looking for help with my 2021 T-Roc diesel that recently started acting up. When accelerating, the engine feels sluggish with noticeable power loss and there is visible smoke from the exhaust. The engine light hasnt come on yet, but I suspect DPF issues. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? I want to know if DPF cleaning solved it or if you needed a complete filter replacement. Also interested in repair costs and how long the fix took at the workshop. Thanks in advance for sharing your experiences.

I had a similar issue with my 2019 VW Tiguan diesel last year and can share my troubleshooting journey. The symptoms were almost identical, reduced power output and dark exhaust smoke, especially during acceleration. After some research on fuel efficiency and exhaust system issues, I took it to a workshop for diagnosis. The mechanics confirmed my suspicion about DPF problems. They first attempted DPF cleaning, but diagnostic tests showed the filter was beyond recovery due to excessive backpressure in the exhaust system. The only solution was a complete filter replacement. The total repair cost came to 1550€, which included: Diagnostic testing, DPF removal and replacement, System reset and testing The entire process took about 2 working days at the workshop. Since the repair, the engine performance has returned to normal with no smoke issues. Before suggesting specific solutions, could you share: Current mileage on your T-Roc, Typical driving conditions (city/highway split), Any previous DPF-related repairs, Recent changes in driving patterns This information would help determine if your situation matches what I experienced and whether you might need similar repairs.

My vehicle has 60512km on the odometer and just had its yearly service last month. The DPF problems you described match my symptoms exactly. The smoke and power loss started getting worse during city driving. My driving pattern is about 70% city traffic with frequent short trips, which I know isnt ideal for diesel filter regeneration. Your experience with the failed DPF cleaning attempt is concerning. The high repair costs for a complete filter replacement would be tough to handle, especially since my vehicle is just starting to show these issues. Before going straight to filter replacement, I plan to try some preventive measures to improve fuel efficiency and DPF performance: Taking weekly longer highway drives, Using premium diesel fuel, Avoiding too many short trips Would you recommend attempting a professional DPF cleaning first, or should I prepare for a full replacement given the similar symptoms?

A forced DPF cleaning might still work in your case, especially since your vehicle is newer and has lower mileage than mine was when the issues started. When my Tiguan had these problems, it had around 85000km and a history of mostly city driving. The preventive steps you mentioned are good starting points. I tried similar measures before going for repairs, but in my case, the damage was already too extensive. The backpressure readings during vehicle inspection were far beyond acceptable limits. Based on your description, I suggest: 1. Get a diagnostic test to measure exhaust backpressure 2. Try professional DPF cleaning if the readings arent too high 3. Monitor engine performance after cleaning A cleaning service typically costs 250-400€ and takes about a day. This is much more affordable than the filter replacement I needed. If cleaning doesnt resolve the issues within a few weeks, then consider replacement to avoid potential engine damage. The key difference between our cases might be catching the problem early. My mistake was waiting too long after the first symptoms appeared, which led to irreversible filter damage and the need for complete replacement.

Thanks for the detailed feedback and sharing your repair experience. After considering your advice and comparing our situations, I feel more confident about my next steps. My shorter mileage and early detection of the problem give me hope that a complete filter replacement wont be necessary. I will book a vehicle inspection next week to check the sensor fault readings and exhaust backpressure levels. The professional DPF cleaning cost of 250-400€ seems reasonable compared to full replacement. I will try this option first, along with the preventive measures I mentioned. The mechanic can evaluate if cleaning alone will be sufficient based on the diagnostic results. Until the workshop appointment, I have already started taking longer highway drives to help with natural regeneration. The fuel efficiency seems slightly better after a recent 45-minute highway run. Will update once I get the diagnostic results and know whether cleaning worked or if I need to consider the more expensive filter replacement option. Hopefully catching these symptoms early will save me from the costly repair you experienced.
