T-Roc Hood Safety System Triggers Without Impact

My 2021 T-Roc is showing Active hood system faults and I need advice. The car suddenly started displaying Active hood fault message along with an airbag warning light. The hood latch system seems to have triggered its spring actuators without any accident or impact. Running diagnostics confirmed error codes in memory. Has anyone encountered similar issues with their pedestrian safety systems? Looking for experiences with repair solutions and workshop fixes, particularly regarding the impact sensor and car electronics associated with the active hood. What was the root cause in your case and how was it resolved?

I had a similar issue with my 2019 T-Cross, which shares many car electronics and safety system components with your T-Roc. I have some experience working with VW vehicles and their safety systems. The hood latch and collision detection system on these models can sometimes trigger falsely due to a faulty acceleration sensor. In my case, the active hood system fault appeared suddenly during normal driving, just like yours. After getting it diagnosed at the workshop, they found that the acceleration sensor was sending incorrect signals to the safety system control unit. The repair involved replacing the defective sensor and recalibrating the entire active hood system. Total cost was 315€ including parts and labor. Before suggesting specific solutions for your case, it would help to know: Has the active hood physically deployed or is it just showing warnings? Are there any other warning lights besides the airbag? Did you notice any impacts or unusual events before the fault appeared? Have you had any recent work done on the front end of the vehicle? This could also be related to other components of the pedestrian protection system, so having these details would help narrow down the exact cause.

Latest service was 2 weeks ago at 51000km and they did not mention any issues. I can confirm the hood physically deployed, it popped up about 10cm at the rear edge without any impact. Only the airbag light is on alongside the warning message. No recent front end work or damage. The system triggered while driving at normal speed on a regular road. The service center wants to charge 850€ just for diagnostics and initial inspection before even discussing repair costs. Seems quite steep considering others have had similar issues resolved for less. Really hoping to avoid paying those diagnostic fees if others have found more reasonable solutions to these active hood system faults.

Thanks for providing those additional details. Similar situation happened on my T-Cross too, and I was also quoted a high diagnostic fee initially. The physical deployment of the hood without impact strongly suggests either a crash detection sensor malfunction or a control unit fault in the safety system. The fact it happened during normal driving, just like in my case, typically points to an electrical system fault rather than mechanical damage. Here is what worked in my situation: Found a certified independent workshop specializing in VW safety systems, They performed initial diagnostics for 120€, Problem was traced to a faulty wiring connector near the hood latch sensor, Total repair including resetting the system fault codes and recalibration came to 380€ Key advice: The active hood system requires specialized resetting after deployment. Avoid driving too much with the system triggered as it can stress other safety system components. Some shops artificially inflate diagnostic fees for these systems, I would suggest getting quotes from a few different certified workshops. The repair itself is usually straightforward once properly diagnosed, and should cost significantly less than 850€ for diagnostics alone.

I appreciate all the helpful responses. Got quotes from three different certified workshops today and found much more reasonable pricing. The lowest quote was 450€ for full diagnostics and repair, including resetting the crash detection system and recalibrating all hood sensors. Going with the shop that specializes in VW pedestrian safety systems. They confirmed seeing multiple similar cases where the active hood deployed due to faulty impact sensor wiring. They will do a complete check of all related car sensors and safety systems as part of the service. Will update once the repair is done, but feeling better about not having to pay those inflated diagnostic fees. Thanks for sharing your experiences, helped me avoid overpaying and find a more reasonable solution for these hood system faults.
