T-Roc Transmission Nightmare: Rough Shifts & Warning Lights

Had nearly identical symptoms on a Golf GTI 2016 gasoline. The rough shifting and emergency mode activation pointed to a failing transmission control module. The grinding noise was actually related to a coolant leak affecting the transmission cooling system. Initial diagnosis suggested radiator issues, but leak detection testing revealed the transmission fluid cooler was contaminated with engine coolant. The coolant leak caused internal damage to the transmission control unit connections. The repair required: Complete radiator repair, Replacement of transmission fluid cooler, New transmission control module, Full system flush to remove contaminated fluids, Replacement of corroded wiring harness connectors This was a serious issue requiring immediate attention, as continued driving could have led to complete transmission failure. These symptoms often get misdiagnosed as simple transmission problems, but the root cause typically stems from cooling system complications. After repair, all transmission functions returned to normal, with no more warning lights or emergency mode activation. Would strongly recommend getting a specialized transmission diagnostic before any major repairs.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Your case sounds exactly like what I am dealing with on my T-Roc right now. Really helpful to know about the coolant leak connection to the transmission issues, as my mechanic was going in circles with the diagnosis. Quick question, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the complete repair? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the fix, or have you noticed any other cooling system or transmission-related problems popping up? This car overheating situation combined with transmission problems is quite concerning, so I want to make sure I have a realistic budget in mind before heading to the shop.

Glad my experience could help. After taking the T-Roc back to the shop, they found the root cause was indeed just a faulty pressure sensor connection. The radiator coolant pressure readings were incorrect due to a loose cable, triggering the transmission safety mode unnecessarily. The total repair only came to 95€ for fixing the connector, much less severe than my previous car issue. The pressure gauge now shows correct readings, and the transmission is shifting perfectly. The cooling fan operates normally, and there have been zero transmission or coolant leak issues since the repair two months ago. This shows how important proper diagnostics are, what seemed like a major transmission problem turned out to be a simple sensor connection issue. No need for extensive repairs in this case. The car runs like new now with all warning lights cleared. I would still recommend monitoring your coolant levels regularly as a precaution, but based on your symptoms, you might be dealing with a similar straightforward sensor problem rather than actual transmission damage.

Thanks for the feedback. I got the car checked yesterday at a different mechanic who specializes in transmission issues. They used a proper pressure gauge setup for diagnostics and found it was actually a clogged transmission fluid cooler causing the overheating. The repair ended up costing 850€ total: New transmission fluid cooler, System flush, Fresh transmission fluid, Pressure sensor replacement, Labor costs The mechanic showed me the old cooler which was severely blocked with debris. This restriction was causing the transmission to overheat and go into limp mode. They also noticed the radiator repair would be needed soon but it wasnt urgent yet. After the fix, the transmission shifts perfectly again with no grinding or warning lights. The car overheating issues are completely resolved. Going to get that radiator looked at in a few months just to be proactive about preventing future problems. Really glad I got a second opinion instead of jumping into major transmission work. Sometimes the simpler explanation turns out to be the right one.
