T-Roc Transmission Sluggish + Limp Mode Warning Alert

Looking for advice, my T-Roc has developed rough shifting between gears lately. The gear selector feels sluggish and sometimes takes a second or two to engage. The transfer case warning light came on yesterday and the car went into limp mode. Anyone else experienced this with their 2023 T-Roc? Running a gasoline engine with 104820km on the clock. Want to avoid another costly misdiagnosis at the shop. What should I check first and did you manage to fix this without major repairs?

Had similar symptoms with a 2020 VW Tiguan. The transfer case warning combined with rough shifting pointed to an ABS sensor malfunction that was triggering false powertrain malfunction alerts. The fault codes showed multiple transmission-related errors, but these were consequential faults stemming from the faulty ABS sensor. The car went into limp mode as a protective measure. The main issue was that corroded wiring to the ABS sensor was causing erratic signals, confusing both the transmission control and transfer case modules. The repair involved: Full diagnostic scan to identify primary vs consequential faults, Replacement of the damaged ABS sensor wiring harness, Recalibration of the transmission control module, Reset of all fault codes This was a serious repair due to the risk of transmission damage if left unaddressed. Would recommend getting it checked soon, as driving in limp mode for extended periods can cause additional wear on transmission components. Before heading to the shop, check if there are any visible signs of damaged wiring near the wheel wells, as this could help pinpoint the issue for the technician.

Thanks for sharing your experience. My VW T-Roc actually had the exact same symptoms last month. The gear selector was really unresponsive and the transfer case warning also triggered limp mode. After reading your post about the ABS sensor being the root cause, I feel a bit more confident about the repair path. Planning to take it to the shop this week. Did you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the full diagnostic trouble shooting and repair? Also curious if you have had any similar issues pop up since getting it fixed?

The diagnostic troubleshooting and repair worked out really well in my case. The mechanic found that the ABS sensor wiring was indeed causing the transfer case limp mode to activate, just as suspected. They fixed all the consequential faults at no cost since it was traced back to the ABS system issue. Since the repair, the transmission has been shifting smoothly and the powertrain malfunction warnings haven't returned. The control module is working as intended now, and I haven't experienced any more false alerts or limp mode activations. It has been about 8 months of trouble-free driving. The diagnostic scan was crucial in identifying that the transmission issues were secondary problems. Having this information helped avoid unnecessary transmission work. Make sure your mechanic does a thorough scan to find the root cause rather than just addressing the symptoms.

Went to the shop yesterday and got everything sorted. The mechanic confirmed it was the ABS sensor causing havoc with the transmission control module. They ran a complete diagnostic scan which showed multiple fault codes, but like you mentioned, these were all stemming from the faulty sensor. Total bill came to 450€ including parts and labor. The torque converter is working perfectly now and all warning lights are off. No more limp mode issues and the gear changes are crisp again. The technician showed me where the wiring had corroded and explained how this triggered the cascade of transmission warnings. Really glad I asked here first, saved me from authorizing unnecessary transmission work. Will keep an eye on it, but so far the car drives like new. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction with this one.
