Tacoma AC and Temperature Sensor Issue

My 2005 Toyota Tacoma with a gasoline engine has a weird issue at 98015 km. The temperature sensor in the heat exchanger seems defective, with an error stored and a warning light. Even stranger, the AC won't kick on. Thinking the AC control unit might be the culprit, but haven't been able to pin it down. Anyone seen this before? Looking at almost 1000€ to fix.

Summary of the thread

A 2005 Toyota Tacoma is experiencing issues with a defective temperature sensor in the heat exchanger, leading to an error and warning light, along with a non-functional AC. The temperature gauge fluctuates wildly, suggesting a problem with the temperature sensor. A similar issue was resolved by addressing the AC control unit, which is suspected to be the cause. It is advised to have a professional workshop confirm the diagnosis before proceeding with repairs.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

I had something similar happen on my Tacoma. Is your temperature gauge reading incorrectly, or does the AC just refuse to turn on completely? Could also be related to a coolant leak affecting the cooling system, which messes with engine cooling and the HVAC system altogether. Have you checked the coolant level recently?

Coolant levels are fine. The AC is just dead, won't engage at all. And yes, I should have mentioned that the temperature gauge fluctuates wildly, seemingly caused by problems with the temperature sensor. The readings are all over the place. You mentioned that you had a similar issue: was it also related to the AC?

Yep, fluctuating temperature gauge plus a dead AC sounds very familiar. Turned out to be exactly as you suggested: problems with the AC control unit. I'd suggest taking it to a trusted workshop to confirm the likely cause before replacing parts, since messing with the refrigerant isn't something you can do at home.

Thanks for confirming. I will take your advice and bring it to the shop to take care of it. Hopefully, it's just the AC control unit, but your experience is useful.
