Cable looks fine on a quick glance. But, like you said, the error is stored alright. Any tips on checking the connection more thoroughly?

Well, it could be a defective connection, although it looked just fine for me, too. Sadly I had to take it to the shop for diagnostics. Eventually it turned out that it was the O2 sensor and the cost to fix that issue was 95€. Now, you might be able to test the sensor's output with a multimeter, but honestly, unless you're comfortable with that, I'd recommend a workshop visit. They have the right tools and can pinpoint the issue quickly.

Cheers - that's what I was afraid of. Booked it in; faulty O2 sensor as you suggested, connection was dodgy too. Replaced and all good now.

Sounds familiar! Had a similar issue with my old 2012 Volvo C30. The check engine light and fuel consumption problems are classic O2 sensor symptoms. Was the error stored in the memory? I would imagine it is the same as with a blown lightbulb: overtime the filament gets thinner and thinner, up to the point the lightbulb stops working. Have you checked the cable or plug connection to the sensor for any damage or corrosion?
