Tacuma overheating check engine light

I'm having a weird issue with my 2005 Chevrolet Tacuma (gasoline engine). The check engine light keeps coming on, and the engine is overheating like crazy! I even found coolant spilled under the car the other day. I've checked the coolant level, and it seems fine. Could this be a software glitch? It's driving me nuts!

Summary of the thread

The 2005 Chevrolet Tacuma is experiencing overheating and a persistent check engine light, with coolant found spilled under the car. The issue is suspected to be a control unit communication error, potentially caused by a wiring issue or a faulty connection in the CAN bus system. The suggested solution is to check diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and inspect the wiring and connections, which led to identifying a defective plug connection as the cause. The problem was resolved with a repair at a workshop.

Sounds like you might have a control unit communication error. I had a similar issue with my 2012 Opel Astra. Same symptoms: check engine light, overheating, and coolant issues. Have you pulled any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs)? It could be a wiring issue or a problem with the CAN bus. Knowing the DTC would really help narrow things down.

I haven't pulled any codes yet, but I'll do that tomorrow. What exactly do you mean by 'wiring issue'? Could it just be a loose plug or something? And what's a CAN bus?

Yes, it could be as simple as a loose or corroded plug connection to one of the control units. The CAN bus is basically the communication network that allows the various electronic control units in your car to talk to each other. If there's a problem with the wiring or a faulty control unit, it can disrupt that communication and cause all sorts of weird symptoms. Given the overheating and coolant spill, I'd strongly suggest getting it checked by a workshop. It is very likely a defective plug or wiring.

I understand. I pulled the codes and, as you suspected, it's a control unit communication error! I'll take it to a workshop and have them check the wiring and connections. Hopefully, it's just a simple fix! It was a defective plug connection. Repair cost me 95€, so not too bad!
