Talento transmission slipping grinding

Hi, I'm experiencing some issues with my 2016 Fiat Talento, diesel engine. It's done 125660 km. The check engine light and transmission indicator light are both on. I've noticed the gearbox slips occasionally, and the gear shifts aren't as clean as they used to be. There's also a grinding noise sometimes when shifting. I plugged it into a diagnostic tool and it's showing an error in the memory. I suspect it might be the automatic transmission torque converter lock-up clutch. Has anyone else had similar issues?

A 2016 Fiat Talento with 125,660 km is experiencing transmission issues, including slipping, grinding noises, and illuminated check engine and transmission indicator lights. The problem is suspected to be related to the automatic transmission torque converter lock-up clutch, as indicated by a diagnostic error code. After consulting a transmission specialist, the torque converter was confirmed as the issue, leading to a repair.

That sounds rough. I had something similar happen on my old van, though it wasn't a Fiat. The grinding noise and slipping are classic symptoms of transmission issues. The error code pretty much seals the deal. Have you checked the transmission fluid level and condition? Low or burnt fluid can cause these problems, though it likely wouldn't be the root cause.

Thanks for the quick reply. I did check the transmission fluid, and it seemed okay, both in terms of level and colour. Given the symptoms and the error code, how certain are we talking that it is the converter? Is there anything else that could cause these symptoms, or should I brace myself for a hefty transmission repair bill?

Well, without tearing it apart myself, I can't give you a 100% guarantee, but all signs point to the torque converter. Other things 'could' cause similar symptoms, like valve body issues, but the error code and grinding noise are pretty specific. Honestly, I think you're looking at a transmission shop visit in your future. Been there, done that. Best to get a professional diagnosis and quote.

Appreciate the advice. I took it to a transmission specialist, and they confirmed it was the torque converter. Repair cost came to 2120€. It's getting fixed now. Thanks again for confirming my suspicions.
