The check engine light's been flickering for a week or so, but now it's solid. Haven't checked the air intake before the MAF, good shout! Is that likely to cause the sensor to fail, or just mess with the readings?

A blockage or leak could definitely mess with the readings, causing the engine to overcompensate and throw up errors. It might not be the cause of the sensor failing, but it'll give false data for sure. Given the solid check engine light and the other symptoms, I'd say the sensor is likely done for. Best get it checked out at a workshop, they'll be able to confirm it with diagnostics.

Cheers, appreciate the advice! Took it to the garage, and you were spot on - LMM was toast. New one fitted, cost 365€ all in, and she's running sweet as a nut now!

Sounds like a dodgy MAF sensor, alright. The symptoms definitely point that way. Has the check engine light only just come on, or has it been on for a while? Have you tried checking the air intake for any obvious blockages or leaks before the MAF?
