T&C Bluetooth Call Issues: Bad Microphone Fix Tips

My 2002 Chrysler Town and Country has completely stopped working with phone calls. The Bluetooth connection seems fine but during calls nobody can hear me speaking. Speech recognition also fails completely. I checked and there is an error code stored in the system. Looking at the symptoms, I suspect the hands-free microphone might be faulty. Has anyone dealt with a similar microphone repair issue? Really interested to know what the actual fix was and roughly what it cost at the shop. Any tips for troubleshooting before taking it in would also be helpful.

Had the exact same audio input issues with my 2000 Chrysler Voyager last summer. With some experience working on cars but limited knowledge of infotainment systems, I decided to have it checked professionally when voice recognition and call functions stopped working completely. Initially tried basic troubleshooting: Cleared system memory, Removed/repaired Bluetooth connections, Checked for loose cables behind the headliner, Tested different phones to rule out device issues None of these fixed the sound quality problems. The workshop found that the entire hands-free module was defective, not just the microphone. Poor ambient noise filtering was apparently the first sign of the failing unit. The repair involved: Complete diagnostic scan, Removing headliner to access components, Replacing the hands-free control module, Programming and testing new unit Total cost was 815€ including parts and labor. Since the fix, all audio features work perfectly again. What trim level is your Town and Country? Also, can you share the error code? This would help confirm if you are dealing with the same issue I encountered.

Thanks for confirming what you found with your Voyager. My mileage is at 198368 KM and this voice recognition issue started about a month after my last service. The error code I am getting is P1E34. Looking at your repair steps, I have already tried resetting the Bluetooth and checking cables, but there is still no sound quality improvement when making calls. The ambient noise filtering seems nonexistent now, which matches what you experienced. Would you recommend checking the fuse box first before removing the headliner to access the microphone? I am trying to avoid unnecessary labor costs if possible.

Great to help with more details about the issue. Your mileage is quite close to when my Voyager started showing these exact symptoms. The P1E34 code definitely points to the hands-free module failure, just like in my case. While checking fuses is usually a good first step, in this specific case it probably will not help. The issue lies with the hands-free control module itself, as indicated by the complete loss of speech recognition and ambient noise filtering capabilities. The additional symptom you mentioned about the audio system deteriorating after service is interesting. In my case, the technician explained that these modules tend to fail gradually, with voice recognition being the first feature affected. The complete loss of ambient noise control is typically the final stage before total failure. Since we have matching symptoms and error codes, I would suggest skipping the fuse check and going straight to the module replacement. Even though the labor costs for headliner removal seem high, attempting partial repairs often ends up being more expensive in the long run. The complete audio system restoration was worth the investment in my case, especially considering how much the hands-free functionality is used for calls and voice commands.

Thanks for sharing such detailed repair information about your Voyager. Based on your feedback and my error code P1E34, I will skip checking the fuses and have the full hands-free module replaced. I called a local shop and they quoted around 780€ for the complete job including diagnostics, parts and labor. While the price is steep, having working speech recognition and clear phone calls is important for my daily commute. The failing ambient noise filtering has become really frustrating during Bluetooth calls. Will schedule the audio system repair next week and have them check the entire module rather than just trying to fix the microphone. Better to address the root cause than waste money on partial fixes. The matching symptoms between our vehicles makes me confident this is the right approach. Thanks again for saving me some troubleshooting time, really helpful to learn from someone who already went through this exact sound quality issue.
