Taos Gearbox Failure: Slipping and Rough Shift Alert

My Taos seems to have issues with the gearbox lately, noticing some rough shifts and slipping between gears. The powertrain malfunction warning came on and I suspect the transfer case might be going into limp mode. Currently at 47947km on my 2023 gas model. The last mechanic visit left me with doubts about their diagnosis. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms? Looking for recommendations on what to check and trusted repair options.

Summary of the thread

The initial issue with the Taos involved rough shifting and slipping gears, accompanied by a powertrain malfunction warning, suspected to be linked to the transfer case entering limp mode. A similar case with a VW Tiguan revealed that such symptoms could be due to a failing ABS control module, which sends incorrect signals to the transmission control unit, causing unnecessary limp mode activation. The solution involved replacing the ABS module, recalibrating the transmission control unit, and clearing fault codes, leading to a resolution of the issues. Proper diagnosis and repair of the ABS system, rather than focusing solely on the transmission, proved effective in resolving the problem.

Had similar symptoms with a 2020 VW Tiguan TSI. The rough shifting and powertrain malfunction warnings turned out to be linked to a failing ABS control module, which was causing traction control issues and false transmission signals. The diagnostic trouble codes initially pointed to transmission problems, but further testing revealed the ABS module was sending incorrect signals to the transmission control unit. This caused the system to engage limp mode unnecessarily. After replacing the ABS module, several consequential faults needed attention: Recalibration of the transmission control unit, Reset of the powertrain control systems, Clearing multiple stored fault codes, Testing wheel speed sensor signals This was a serious repair requiring specialized diagnostic equipment. The initial misdiagnosis at other shops is common since transmission symptoms can mask underlying ABS system failures. The key is finding a shop with proper diagnostic capabilities to identify the root cause rather than just treating the transmission symptoms. Worth having the ABS system thoroughly checked before any transmission work.

Thanks for sharing your experience. My Taos had very similar problems and fault codes back in June. Seems like these symptoms are quite common in VW models. The traction control light also kept coming on out of nowhere. After reading your post, I am convinced the repair shop did the right diagnosis. They also found issues with the ABS module and had to recalibrate several systems to get everything working properly again. The car runs perfectly now, no more limp mode or transmission problems. Just curious, do you remember roughly how much you paid for the complete repair? Also, has everything been working fine since the fix or have you noticed any other issues popping up?

The final repair cost was actually 0€ since the ABS module issues were covered under warranty. The transfer case limp mode and all related symptoms completely cleared up after the repair shop properly diagnosed and fixed the underlying ABS system faults. The gear selector now shifts smoothly and all powertrain malfunction warnings have disappeared. It has been running flawlessly for over 8 months now with no repeat issues. The fault codes have not returned since the comprehensive system recalibration. Getting the right diagnosis initially saves a lot of headache. When multiple systems show issues simultaneously, it often points to an electrical or sensor problem rather than mechanical transmission failure. The key is finding technicians who understand these complex system interactions.

Thanks everyone for the great advice. After dealing with similar transmission issues, I finally got my Taos properly fixed last week. The repair shop did a thorough diagnosis and also found problems with the ABS module affecting multiple systems. The torque converter was slipping and the transfer case kept going into limp mode because of faulty signals. They replaced the ABS module, recalibrated everything, and cleared all the fault codes. Total cost came to 2100€ but my extended warranty covered most of it. Now the transmission shifts perfectly and the traction control system works as it should. No more powertrain malfunction warnings or rough shifting. Really glad I took it to a shop that knew what they were doing instead of rushing into unnecessary transmission work. Will update if any new issues come up, but so far everything is running great. Thanks again for helping me understand what was really going on with my car.
