Taurus Transmission Issue

I'm having a weird issue with my 2013 Ford Taurus (gasoline engine). It's got about 151k km on it. Lately, the engine warning light keeps popping up, and sometimes the transmission light too. I scanned the codes and it points to a faulty transmission oil temperature sensor. Besides the lights, the gearbox occasionally goes into emergency mode, and sometimes it feels like it's slipping or shifting roughly. There's even a grinding noise sometimes when shifting! I checked the basics, but I'm stumped. Could a low gearbox oil level really cause all this?

I also drive a Taurus, although I don't know the year by heart. I had similar symptoms a while back. Engine light, weird shifting. The temperature sensor thing rings a bell. Have you actually checked the transmission fluid level yourself, or just visually inspected for leaks? It's like checking your engine oil - needs to be done properly to get an accurate reading.

I haven't properly checked the level, just looked for obvious leaks. Where is the dipstick located? And what's the proper procedure to check the transmission oil level? I wouldn't want to make things worse.

On my car the dipstick is located near the front of the engine bay, usually marked with a bright color. However, I strongly suggest you consult your owner's manual for the precise location and the exact procedure. Remember that some transmissions need to be at operating temperature when you check the level, others need to be cold. Better safe than sorry. But honestly, with those grinding noises, it sounds like it is time for a visit to a transmission specialist. It's like when your car's making weird noises – sometimes you just need a professional to take a listen. Do not ignore that, or you will end up paying a lot more for a full transmission rebuild.

Thanks a lot for the advice! I'll definitely check the fluid level properly. Turns out the gearbox oil level was indeed too low! I went to the workshop, they topped it off and replaced the faulty temperature sensor. Cost me around 365€, but now it's shifting smoothly again!
