Teana Fuel Tank Ventilation Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2017 Nissan Teana is experiencing a check engine light and stalling at idle, particularly after refueling, suggesting a potential fuel tank ventilation system issue. The suspected cause is a defective activated charcoal filter, part of the emission control system. A similar case involved a hissing sound when opening the fuel cap, indicating improper venting, and was resolved by confirming a leak in the charcoal filter through a smoke test. The recommended solution is to have a diagnostic test performed at a workshop to accurately identify and fix the problem.

Interesting. I haven't detected any unusual fuel smells, but I do sometimes hear hissing when opening the fuel cap. It doesn't happen every time, but I've definitely noticed it. What component failed in your case, and how did you pinpoint it?

The hissing is a big clue; it means the system isn't venting properly! I initially suspected the purge valve, but a smoke test confirmed the activated charcoal filter itself was leaking. It's part of the emission control system, so a failure there throws everything off. Honestly, without the smoke test, I'd have been chasing my tail. I recommend taking your car to a workshop so they can run a diagnostic test. Fixing this cost around 250 to 300€ at the time.

Thanks for the insight! I appreciate you sharing your experience. I suspected it was something along those lines, but your confirmation and the mention of the smoke test is really helpful. I'll take it to a shop and get it properly diagnosed. Looks like it'll cost about 275€, but at least I know what to expect.

That sounds familiar. I have a Teana too, and I had similar symptoms: check engine light and occasional stall. It turned out to be related to the fuel tank ventilation. Do you notice any unusual fuel smells or hissing when opening the fuel cap, like opening a shaken soda?
